Talk of a U.S. CTO, Obama Tech Policy

President-elect Obama has a science-tech-innovation page up on his transition website.  Check it out at:

    http://www.change.gov/agenda/technology/

There is a tool on the site that lets you submit your ideas, though the Tech Agenda that VFI is developing will be a way for all of us to collectively submit ideas.

The general drift of the incoming President's focus looks good, though the proof will be in the details. A top government CTO will have to be careful to allow competition and innovation, even as he or she provides guidelines for government agency purchases.  Ultimately, interop will be a key to seeing that technologies work together and agencies have choice (and interop means a lot more than standards).  The CTO might start by looking at who is still using and protecting creaky old systems.

I stand corrected, sort of.  The Obama transition website changed over the weekend, and the tech agenda is no longer there.  You can still generically submit ideas to the new administration at http://change.gov/page/s/yourvision.
