As we discussed with many Microsoft alums at the Connect 2023 Microsoft Alumni Network Global Summit, there is growing—and welcome—interest among policymakers in ensuring that AI is safe, secure, and trustworthy. Here are some recent AI policy developments:

  • On September 12, Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith testified at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing entitled, “Oversight of A.I.: Legislating on Artificial Intelligence.” He endorsed the idea of creating a federal licensing system for certain AI platforms and forming an independent oversight body to regulate AI. You can read his written Senate testimony here.
  • The 78th United Nations General Assembly, recently held in New York, included discussions of how AI can help address many global challenges. Microsoft speakers highlighted the use of AI in improving global health, protecting civilians in conflict zones, and improving infrastructure operations. You can read a recap of #UNGA78 from Microsoft on the Issues in this LinkedIn post.
