This Week in Washington
- Axios: The White House released its legislative AI recommendations, a framework of potential legislation the administration would like Congress to pass. Among other proposals, the plan calls for bans on AI replicas of someone’s likeness, regulatory sandboxes for relaxed experimentation and innovation, and policy to protect children online.
- POLITICO: President Trump appointed the first set of executives to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The new panel, co-chaired by White House AI czar David Sacks and Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) head Michael Kratsios, will guide much of the administration’s approach to AI policy.
- CyberScoop: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a joint warning that Russian intelligence is targeting WhatsApp and Signal users in widespread hacking attempts. In particular, Russian hackers are using already compromised accounts to conduct phishing attacks.
- ABC News: The State Department launched the Bureau of Emerging Threats, a new entity specifically created to combat the weaponization of AI and other technology by American adversaries. The new Bureau will be led by Anny Vu, who previously served as the chargé d’affaires to China.

- TechCrunch: Breathalyzer company Intoxalock was compromised by a cyberattack, leaving thousands of users unable to access their cars. No user data was lost in the attack, and the company’s systems are now back up and running.
