Microsoft Launches Community-First AI Infrastructure Initiative

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced the company’s Community-First AI Infrastructure initiative, anchored by the following five key commitments to communities where Microsoft builds, owns, and operates datacenters.

This Week in Washington

  • POLITICO: President Trump renominated Sean Plankey as the next director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency after his nomination stalled in the Senate last year. If confirmed, Plankey would become one of the highest-ranking cybersecurity officials in the country. 
      
  • Reuters: In the days following the U.S. operation in Venezuela earlier this month, a Chinese cyberespionage group, Mustang Panda, targeted American officials with Venezuelan-themed phishing emails. The full impact of the hack is not yet known.  
     
  • AI Magazine: Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) formally joined Pax Silica, an American-led coalition of shared investment in datacenter and semiconductor development. Other coalition members include the U.K., Israel, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.

  • Microsoft on the Issues: Microsoft announced comprehensive legal action against RedVDS, a global cybercrime fraud marketplace. RedVDS-purchased virtual machines send millions of phishing messages a day.
      
  • Bleeping Computer: The University of Hawaii disclosed that its Cancer Center was breached in a ransomware attack last year. The incident was contained to a single research project but resulted in compromised personal information, including social security numbers.
     
  • CNBC: Apple announced a partnership with Google to power its upgraded Siri models. The partnership will also extend to future Apple AI models.  
     
  • Axios: New York announced Energize NY Development, a new initiative to allow datacenters to easily connect to the state power grid, provided they commit to covering the full costs of their electricity consumption. The announcement mirrors Microsoft’s commitment to community investment.
