Last month, VFI was pleased to welcome many members of the Microsoft Alumni Network to our first webinar of the year, “What’s on the Tech Policy Agenda for 2025,” featuring Microsoft General Manager of Public Policy Gerry Petrella. Here are key takeaways from Gerry’s presentation:
- We could see bipartisan consensus this year in a few areas of tech policy, including updating the permitting process for energy infrastructure to promote more development; strengthening children’s online safety; and outlawing the misuse of synthetic media (e.g., non-consensual intimate images).
- Congress is working on reconciliation legislation. This type of large budget bill will be the major focus for Congress this year and creates the opportunity for legislation that could help the innovation economy. It may advance before other more specific bills.
- President Trump’s AI Action Plan, expected in the first half of the year, will provide greater clarity about the administration’s approach to AI adoption, exports, and guardrails.
- While political differences could slow legislative progress on tech in Washington, we could see states take action on tech policy issues.
Gerry noted that Microsoft celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and the company will continue to identify ways to work with both Republican and Democratic leaders on important issues, as the company has over the years. Microsoft continues to make security its top priority, supports initiatives to power America’s AI economy, and remains committed to its sustainability goals.
