Tech Industry Forms Alliance to Support Open AI Models
In an effort led by NVIDIA, more than three dozen technology companies including Microsoft banded together to form the Open Secure AI Alliance. Announced on July 27, the new organization is dedicated to supporting the wide availability of open frontier AI models, which can be leveraged for cyber defense, along with other uses.
The formation of this organization followed the publication of the “Open Weights and American AI Leadership” open letter, which urges policymakers to support an open AI ecosystem.
Federal Genesis Mission Funds AI-driven Research Projects
Last month, the White House and the U.S. Department of Energy announced the first cohort of Genesis Mission projects, which aim to leverage AI to drive scientific breakthroughs in energy, national security, healthcare, and other areas. The Genesis Mission will advance R&D by coordinating the activities of U.S. National Laboratories, universities, and technology leaders, including Microsoft. White House Launches AI-powered Cybersecurity Clearinghouse
The White House recently announced a new cybersecurity initiative, “Gold Eagle,” that will coordinate using AI frontier models to identify and patch cybersecurity vulnerabilities. The goal will be to speed and expand cyber vulnerability remediation with a focus on government operations and critical infrastructure. Gold Eagle will serve as a clearinghouse for cybersecurity information sharing across both the private and public sector. Quantum Summit Brings Industry and Government Together
Last month, the White House hosted a historic quantum summit that brought together industry leaders and government officials to focus on meeting the goal of developing a functional quantum computer by 2028.
